PARALLEL OPERATION OF SINGLE PHASE TRANSFORMERS

In modern power distribution systems it becomes inevitable to suffice the increasing load demand very often, in such cases where there is only one transformer connected to accomplish this work become insufficient, another transformer is brought into parallel operation, To maintain the economics and load sharing of these transformers knowledge of the load shared by this transformer becomes important.

To bring parallel operation, it needs to satisfy a few set of rules such as,
Ø  Primary windings of the transformers should be suitable for the supply system voltage and frequency.
Ø  Polarity should be maintained
Ø  The voltage ratings of both primaries and secondaries should be identical, as such, transformation ratio.
Ø  The percentage impedances should be equal in magnitude and have the same X / R ratio in order to avoid circulating current and to operate at different power factors.
Ø  To avoid circulating currents, the equivalent impedances should be inversely proportional to the individual KVA ratings.
